Face-to-face is still best. There is no shortage of information sources for learning about world religions; but if you’re seeking to find out about a new faith (or many faiths), try to speak with an active member or devout follower, as the first, best way to learn the teachings. When your children see that you are interested in learning about your friends’ beliefs (not to convert them or judge them or to convert yourself), then you are sending a signal that this type of discussion, respectfully conducted, is entirely appropriate and possible.

My eldest daughter had numerous Muslim friends (from multiple countries) in middle school in Africa, where they fasted, prayed, and wore a head scarf to school. When I asked about where and how her classmates would perform their prayers she didn’t know the answer. But the next day she was able to ask and learn directly from the girls. I began a respectful and open conversation with legitimate questions to my daughter, and she in turn drew on that experience for an honest exchange with her friends. A book or website could answer many questions, but the human dimension creates a different type of memory.
